THE WISDOM OF TAO

He who knows other men is discerning; he who knows himself is intelligent. He who overcomes others is strong; he who overcomes himself is mighty.

So we have the very best athletes in the nation at the college level playing in the biggest game in their 20 some odd year life. So little separates them in ability, training and physical conditioning and they have both been studying their opponent for the past month. The BCS and ESPN and every sports media guy has been hyping this for the past year. Everything has been carefully planed by the coaches and cheer leaders to keep the adrenalin pumping. Perhaps the only thing that separates these two teams is the intensity level at which they bring after all other preparations have been made. So I was just astonished that after LSU made a spectacular play their teammates on the sideline were called for a personal foul – “Excessive Celebration” OMG what were they doing? Firing cannons? Did they have noise makers left over from New Years Eve? Is this an attempt to be politically correct? We certainly don’t want the other team to feel they aren’t just as good? Hell let them dance in the end zone, let them spike the ball and let them point fingers and stick out tongues. You know those things are mild compared to what goes on when the players are all tangled up at the bottom of a pile and out of sight of the referees. (I had a kid at my high school who would spit chewing tobacco in the ear holes of the other team after he made a tackle.) Do you think the other teams self worth will be forever impaired or will it tick them off and motivate them to play like they need to? Excessive Celebration??? What do you call it after the game when they give them the crystal football?
